The European Commission defines “Early-Stage Researchers” as follows: “The term Early-Stage Researcher refers to researchers in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research activity, including the period of research training.”
In the context of EPICUR, the term “Early Career Researchers” (ECRs) includes doctoral candidates, researchers engaged in postdoctoral research and pursing further qualifications, as well as researchers who are on their pathway to become a full professor (e.g., leaders of young investigators groups, junior professors, lecturers, and “maîtres de conference”).
The role of ECRs in EPICUR
EPICUR’s focus on Early Career Researchers (ECRs) reflects a strategic initiative to nurture the next generation of European research leaders. The alliance recognises that empowering ECRs is essential for driving institutional transformation and addressing key priorities such as youth empowerment, which aligns with the European Commission’s priorities.
As a result, EPICUR designs research and innovation formats with ECRs and master’s students as the primary audience, offering new pathways for them to acquire skills necessary to advance their research careers, both within and outside of academia. ECRs are not just participants but active contributors to the creation of EPICUR’s research-oriented offerings, ensuring that these initiatives are relevant and beneficial to their career progression and address the needs of the target group.
Furthermore, EPICUR has integrated ECRs into its decision-making and governance structures through the formation of the Early Career Researchers Board (ECRB). This inclusion allows ECRs to influence the development of the alliance’s academic culture and offerings. EPICUR is committed to addressing the diverse needs of researchers, particularly those who have historically been underrepresented in academia, such as women, scholars with families, and individuals from non-academic backgrounds.
By fostering these opportunities, EPICUR aims to create a more inclusive, dynamic and supportive environment for researchers at all stages of their careers, positioning ECRs as leaders in the transformation of European academic institutions.
