KIT Science Week 2025

From 14 to 19 October, 2025, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) hosted its third annual KIT Science Week, which was themed “City of the Future”. The event featured over 100 activities, including workshops, lectures, and interactive sessions, which aimed to engage the public and academia in discussions about sustainable urban development. 

EPICUR Citizen Science Workshop 

On 17 October, 2025, EPICUR hosted a Citizen Science workshop, as part of the annual KIT Science Week. Titled “From Idea to Impact – Including EU Funding Strategies,” this event brought together a diverse group of participants, including researchers from various disciplines and university research support staff. The workshop featured renowned experts in the field: 

  • Josep Perelló, University of Barcelona 
  • Anne Kathrine Overgaard, University of Southern Denmark
  • Thomas Kaarsted, University of Southern Denmark

A growing recognition of Citizen Science in academic 

Participants took part in hands-on activities using the CoAct toolkit to refine project ideas and foster collaboration. Interactive discussions explored best practices for cross-sector collaboration, with a focus on the growing importance of Citizen Science in funding programmes like Horizon Europe. A highlight of the workshop was the focus on EU funding strategies, equipping attendees with the knowledge to successfully apply for grants and funding calls related to Citizen Science. These discussions underscored the growing recognition of Citizen Science in academic and funding circles, opening up new possibilities for research and innovation. 

An interactive workshop gathering participants from five EPICUR partner universities 

The workshop attracted participants from KIT and five other EPICUR partner universities, creating a vibrant space for knowledge exchange, networking, and co-creation. In the afternoon, expert speakers offered one-on-one consultations to attendees, providing personalised advice to help participants develop their Citizen Science projects further. This tailored support ensured that attendees left the workshop equipped with the necessary tools and insights necessary to make their projects impactful and fundable. 

Overall, the workshop was a resounding success, empowering attendees with the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to transform their Citizen Science projects into valuable contributions to research and society.
