"Seeking a new language: Narratives on home, (forced) migration and identity of newcoming Ukrainian youth to European cities” aims to identify the Ukrainian youth’s primary modes of narrating migration and the processes of settling in urban communities.
What is it about?
The research team assume that reconstructing these narrative structures, especially the processes of metaphorization, will provide essential insights into how the identities of people with migration experiences are reconstructed in the new place. They view the “seeking a new language” and the development of narrative schemata to describe the experiences simultaneously as an important part of adaptation and integration. Examining these personal, emerging narratives often marked by trauma, is also important in practice – it can help shape more language inclusive public policies toward migrants.
