DIGNITY-EU

DIGNITY-EU unites researchers from Denmark, France, and Germany around a shared agenda in thanatology, focusing on dignity, euthanasia, and spiritual care. The consortium develops a transnational 5 ECTS summer course, joint publications, and an external funding proposal, while fostering mobility of students, early-career researchers, and staff. The project advances European values, human rights, and patient-centered end-of-life care.

Thanatology—the interdisciplinary study of death and dying—is increasingly vital in addressing ethical, cultural, medical, and spiritual challenges at the end of life. This project unites leading researchers from Denmark, France, and Germany across theology, philosophy, psychology, and medicine to examine how dignity, euthanasia, and spiritual care are understood and practiced in different European contexts. Our objective is to establish a sustainable research collaboration in thanatology and to co-develop a joint EPICUR summer course with particular focus on dignity, ethics, and intercultural dialogue. By combining clinical insight with philosophical and theological reflection, the project fosters comparative knowledge, mobility of students and staff, and long-term cooperation between EPICUR partners. It also strengthens the alliance’s mission to link academic excellence with societal needs in sensitive areas of health, ethics, and human rights.
